San Xavier Mission San Xavier Mission

OBJECTIVE OBSERVATION (What do I see in the photograph?)
I see a white building with two towers and a dome. There is an open dirt lot in front of the building. I see some buildings in front of the large white building. In the background of the photo I see mountains.

SUBJECTIVE OBSERVATION (How do I interpret the photograph?)
The white building is a church and serves the Indian population that lives in this area. The buildings in front of the church appear to be in the process of being built. They appear to be adobe (dried mud) buildings. The land area in the background appears to be desert. The mountains in the background of the photo appear to be distant.

MY QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS PHOTOGRAPH

  2. Why is there a dome on one of the towers and not on the other?
  3. What is under the large dome in the center of the large white building?
  4. What is inside the church?
  5. Does anyone live on the church grounds?
  6. Why are there no people in the photo?
  7. Who is building the small adobe buildings?
  8. How far are the mountains in the background?
  9. Why was the church originally built?
  10. Who took this photo?
  11. How does this area and building look today?
  12. What is the history of Spanish missions in the new world?
  13. In what year was this mission built?
  14. How long did it take to build this mission?
  15. How was this mission built and what materials were used to build it?
  16. How did the natives feel about the mission?
