- Tissandier Collection Visual Materials
- Description:
The Tissandier Collection documents the early history of aeronautics in
Europe, especially balloon flight, from the late 18th to the early 20th
century. Subjects range from the first balloon ascent in 1783 through
late 1800s design concepts for heavier-than-air vehicles. The Tissandier
brothers, Albert (1839-1906) and Gaston (1843-1899) were themselves
balloonists and dirigible builders as well as aeronautical authors and
illustrators. The brothers assembled ca. 375 original drawings and
separately published prints, including views of historic ascents and
accidents, technical designs, portraits of aeronauts, posters,
broadsides, cartoons, and ephemera. Vivid coloring enlivens many of the
scenes.

More than 500 prints made in America during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, encompassing several forms of political art.
All of the prints meet two criteria: they were originally designed to express sentiments relating to civic life and government in the United States and they were individually issued prints.
A published catalog of the prints was published in 1991: American Political Prints, 1766-1876: A Catalog
of the Collections in the Library of Congress (Boston: G.K. Hall & Co., 1991)

Japanese woodblock prints and drawings held by the Library Of Congress
Pronts and Photographs division, dating from the seventeenth to the
twentieth centuries, by such artists as Hiroshige, Kuniyoshi, Sadahide,
and Yoshiiku. Subjects include actors, women, landscapes, scenes from
Japanese literature and daily life, and Western foreigners. Many schools
and traditions are represented, but primary strengths include the Japanese
art forms known as Ukiyo-e, translated as "pictures of the floating (or
sorrowful) world"; and Yokohama-e, literally "pictures of Yokohama."

Cartoon prints from Great Britain, from ca. 1650 through 1850, with the bulk in the range 1780-1820.
Specific media forms represented include etchings, engravings, mezzotints, aquatints, and lithographs. Many are hand-colored.
Among the artists represented are: Henry William Bunbury, George and Isaac Cruikshank, Matthew Darly,
William Dent, Robert Dighton, James Gillray, Richard Newton, John Nixon, Thomas Rowlandson, Robert Sayer, and George M. Woodward.
A selection of about 600 images was online in early 2005.
