The welfare of children was a major theme of news coverage during the holiday season. Newspaper photographers captured scenes of hospitalized children talking with Santa Claus (DN-0007024); children with crutches and wheelchairs gathered around a Christmas tree (DN-0002637, DN-0001116); a little boy without legs receiving gifts (DN-00002638); children in a ward with stacks of gifts (DN-0004502); and nurses preparing holiday treats (DN-0007026). As World War I continued in 1917, Chicagoans sponsored a fund-raising event to send aid to children in France for Christmas (DN-0069416).
