American college football began with eastern teams in the late nineteenth century, but by the twentieth century, colleges across the country were fielding teams, and the college game was growing in importance. For example, the University Club, a social club with a building in Chicago's Loop, mounted a plaque of a football player on its building in 1908 (DN-0006636).
