For many years, vendors who brought loads of farm products to market preferred horse-drawn wagons rather than gasoline-powered trucks (DN-0008826). For the police, horses were an effective and adaptable means of transportation on congested city streets and in other crowded places (DN-0051059, DN-0051060). For the army, horses pulled equipment on variable terrain (DN-0054707, DN-0050341) and appeared in parades and crowd-pleasing shows (DN-0006174, DN-0008413, DN-0055935).
