The Chicago Daily News tried to make life a bit easier for its newsboys by providing
a hall where they could meet, gather the newspapers they were going to sell, and
rest (DN-0003063). The newspaper company also subsidized a canteen that sold food to newsboys
at low prices and sponsored a marching group and band with handsome
uniforms that performed in parades (DN-0000538, DN-0065122). James Petrillo, the
powerful leader of the Chicago Federation of Musicians, reputedly got his start
in the band (DN-0081929). Occasionally special events were planned for the newsboys,
such as trips to an amusement park or a skating party (DN-0001790, DN-0081074, DN-0086178,
DN-0087159, DN-0078331).
