Ohio and Erie Canal completed. Operates between Cleveland, Ohio and Portsmouth, Ohio. It is 308 miles long with 146 lift locks and a rise of 1,206 feet.

Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati Railroad chartered.

Ohio is the 3rd most prosperous state, in large part due to the Ohio and Erie Canal.

James Garfield (who becomes the 20th president) works on the canal as a muleskinner.
